What can I say, I am in love, head over heals for these birds!.
They have been such a joy to watch grow and personality is not limited here!. They have amazed me on how mature they are at 4 weeks of age and how much they looked like little bantams by 2 weeks old!.They were getting full feathers by week one and I was shocked.
Icelandics LOVE to be in high places, if you hold out your finger they will gladly perch right there like a bird on a vine. Love the feeling of a bird on your shoulder? I have found, with our flock anyway, that this is one of their favorite places to be. The kids love to sit with them and the birds seem happy to oblige.
We just moved them outdoors to a private spot in the coop for a few reasons. One they were stinkin' up the house..and anyone who has a hot house indoors knows the smell and knows their limit!. My limit was 4 weeks. Which worked out fine for them because they love the cold weather naturally and they are fully feathered so it works out great!. We do have a heat lamp in with them just in case it may still be a bit cold out. The other reason is because they can fly!. As cute as that is the first few times ( well, it was always cute) changing out their feed and water we were gathering birds from kitchen table. Our flock, we noticed could take a good fluttering flight by 2 weeks. They were adamant about getting out of their inside coop to get to wonder the house and forage!.
The coloring is just beautiful on how they just don't look alike. We have some that look a bit like crows but with added coloring and some that look like golden love birds and some that are just beyond beautiful. Well, they are all beautiful in their own right!. I could not be any happier with our decision to bring them to the farm and I look forward to watching them grow and see how much more they change.. No, sign of a rooster yet,but my ears are open as some have been known to make their presence known by 4 weeks of age!. These birds are definitely over achievers!.
